Tribunalul de Arbitraj Sportiv de la Lausanne a respins apelul sportivei din Brazilia care în august 2019 a fost suspendată pe doi ani în urma unui control antidoping pozitiv. În aceste condiții ea nu va putea să participe la Jocurile Olimpice de la Tokyo. Această sancţiune a fost confirmată apoi în apel pe 22 ianuarie 2020. Silva a afirmat că a fost contaminată în mod accidental, la Jocurile Panamericane, ca urmare a contactelor cu colega sa de cameră şi cu suporterii. Rafaela Silva, care a crescut în Citade de Deus, o celebră favelă din Rio, a câştigat cele mai importante titluri în Brazilia, Campionatul Mondial din 2013 şi Jocurile Olimpice din 2016.
